Why is a varistor used in the power supply of the circuit board?

The varistor is used to prevent the voltage from being unstable and causing damage to other electrical components.
The role of the varistor: mainly used for voltage clamping when the circuit is subjected to overvoltage, and absorbs excess current to protect sensitive devices.

The resistor body material of the varistor is a semiconductor, so it is a variety of semiconductor resistors. Now the “zinc oxide” (ZnO) varistor is widely used, whose main material is composed of divalent element zinc (Zn) and hexavalent element oxygen (O). So from the material point of view, zinc oxide varistor is a kind of “II-VI oxide semiconductor”. In Taiwan, China, varistors are called “surge absorbers” and sometimes “electric shock (surge) suppressors (absorbers)”.
