Why is Varistor in Series with the Gas Discharge Tube

When the voltage in the circuit is too large, the varistor performs voltage clamping to absorb excess current and protect the circuit and other electronic components, so it is widely used in power supply systems, security systems, household appliances and other fields.

Since the varistor absorbs large currents in the circuit for a long time, it is easy to cause performance degradation and aging of the varistor. Because the varistor has a large parasitic capacitance, when it is applied to the protection of the AC power system, it will often generate too much leakage current under normal operation. Excessive leakage current will affect the normal operation of the system and cause problems.

In order to solve this problem, the varistor and the gas discharge tube are connected in series. The gas discharge tube also has parasitic capacitance, but the parasitic capacitance of the discharge tube is very small. After being connected in series with the varistor, the total capacitance of the entire series branch can be reduced to a few microfarads.
In this series combination branch, the gas discharge tube acts as a switch, which can separate the varistor from the system under normal operation of the system, so that almost no leakage current flows through the varistor, reducing the flow through the voltage. The voltage and leakage current of the varistor will not increase, which effectively slows down the aging phenomenon of the varistor caused by the leakage current flowing for a long time.
In addition, when the varistor and the gas discharge tube are used in series, it can reducing the output residual pressure, improve the current capacity, and prolong the working time.
