Supercapacitor As Short-Term Backup Power Supply

Supercapacitors are used in a variety of applications. When used as a power balance power supply for lifting devices, it can provide super-large current power; as a vehicle starting power supply, the starting efficiency and reliability are higher than traditional batteries, and can replace traditional batteries in whole or in part; used as traction energy for vehicles, it is possible to produce electric vehicles, replace traditional internal combustion engines, and retrofit existing trolleybuses. In addition, it can also be used as energy storage energy for other electromechanical equipment. During the battery failure or replacement process of the smart energy meter, in order to keep its internal real-time clock circuit working continuously under the specified accuracy, a supercapacitor is selected as the real-time clock backup power supply. Supercapacitors can not only meet the strict operating temperature requirements of -40℃~+85℃ for smart energy meters, but also provide a reliable guarantee for the long-term reliable operation of smart energy meters with their long working life. More importantly, the considerable specific energy and relatively simple charge and discharge management circuit design of supercapacitor itself greatly simplifies the design of real-time clock backup power supply. On the basis of the original lithium battery, the supercapacitor is an ideal backup power supplement. Of course, supercapacitors are also widely used in real-time clock holding of other types of MCUs.

At present, it has been clearly proposed to use supercapacitors as real-time clock backup power to keep the real-time clock circuit running accurately for more than 48 hours, so as to achieve the purpose of the built-in battery being replaceable.
