Why NTC Thermistors Depend on Environment

An NTC thermistor refers to a type of thermistor phenomenon and material in which the resistance decreases exponentially as the temperature rises, exhibiting a negative temperature coefficient. This material is a semiconductor ceramic made by mixing, forming, and sintering two or more metal oxides such as manganese, copper, silicon, cobalt, iron, nickel, and zinc. From this material, thermistors with a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) can be manufactured.

Why do we so often emphasize that the operating environment must be considered when selecting resistors? In many applications, this factor is frequently overlooked. Taking NTC thermistors as an example, operating them beyond their specified temperature range can cause damage to the resistor. Low temperatures can also easily affect the stability of NTC thermistors.

Why NTC Thermistors Depend on Environment

When correctly selecting and using an NTC thermistor, the following issues should be taken into account:
As is well known, NTC thermistors are highly sensitive to ambient temperature. Typically, datasheets only specify the resistance value at room temperature (25 °C). If the actual application conditions are not at room temperature, or if the product’s design or structure causes the ambient temperature around the NTC thermistor to differ from room temperature, the initial resistance value of the NTC under those conditions must first be calculated before proceeding with component selection.

After reading the above, it should be clear why the operating environment of an NTC thermistor is so strongly emphasized. We hope this article is helpful. In recent years, due to favorable market development, the demand for NTC thermistors has continued to increase, along with higher requirements for performance and quality. When purchasing thermistors, it is recommended to choose reputable and reliable manufacturers to avoid potential risks.
