Choosing the wrong capacitor can lead to increased switching noise, voltage overshoot, reduced inverter efficiency, or even premature power device failure.
Two capacitor types play a critical role in traction inverter design:
Safety X & Y Capacitors
High-frequency switching generates common-mode and differential-mode noise that can interfere with nearby electronics and affect EMC compliance.
Safety X and Y capacitors suppress conducted EMI while providing reliable insulation protection under high-voltage operating conditions. Proper selection helps improve EMC performance and system safety.
DC-Link Capacitors
The DC-link capacitor is one of the most critical components in the inverter power stage.

It stabilizes the DC bus voltage, absorbs switching ripple current, and reduces voltage spikes caused by parasitic inductance. Low ESR and high ripple current capability are essential for improving inverter efficiency and extending the lifetime of power modules.
