Capacitors and resistors come in many types. Although they have different names, many look similar. So how can you find the right capacitor or resistor when shopping, such as a varistor?
A varistor is a special electronic component made of semiconductor material, featuring nonlinear voltage-current characteristics. Its resistance changes with voltage. Its main function is to absorb excess current and protect circuits from overvoltage damage. To identify a varistor among many capacitors and resistors, start by recognizing its appearance.
Shape and Color
Varistors typically appear as blue, flat, disc-shaped components. Common diameters include 5mm (05D), 7mm (07D), 10mm (10D), 14mm (14D), and 20mm (20D).
A larger diameter indicates stronger energy absorption and a higher surge current capacity.
Markings on the Surface
Varistors have printed markings (silkscreen) on their surface. The characters and symbols on these markings provide key information for identifying them.
a. Rated Voltage
The rated voltage is usually shown as three or four digits, representing the varistor voltage at 1mA DC current, in volts, with the letter “V”. For example, “561K” indicates a rated voltage of 56 × 10¹ = 560V.
b. Manufacturer Brand
Varistors often display the manufacturer’s logo or abbreviation. Varistors produced by JYH HSU Electronics are marked with the JEC logo.
c. Certification Marks
To meet safety standards, varistors also display various certification marks, which are proof of reliable quality. Common certifications include UL, TUV, and CQC. JYH HSU Electronics’ varistors carry UL, TUV, and CQC certifications, ensuring high-quality and reliable products.
d. Production Date
Varistors may include a production date on the silkscreen, such as “20/06,” indicating manufacturing in June 2020.
By observing the appearance and silkscreen markings, you can easily recognize a varistor among various capacitors and resistors.
