Ceramic Capacitors VS Film Capacitors in High-Frequency Applications

When designing high-frequency, high-voltage circuits, a common question engineers ask is: Should I choose film capacitors or high-voltage ceramic capacitors?

In high-frequency circuits, two parameters largely determine capacitor performance:

Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR)
Equivalent Series Inductance (ESL)

Traditional film capacitors use a wound construction, which inherently introduces higher parasitic inductance. As operating frequency increases, this additional inductance can limit response speed and reduce filtering efficiency.

High-voltage ceramic capacitors, on the other hand, feature a ceramic dielectric structure with extremely short current paths, resulting in:

Lower ESR
Lower ESL
Lower dissipation factor (tanδ) at high frequencies
Better high-frequency impedance characteristics

This allows high-voltage ceramic capacitors to provide cleaner low-impedance paths, lower energy losses, and improved signal integrity in high-frequency circuits.

High Voltage Capability and Reliability

Beyond frequency performance, high-voltage ceramic capacitors also provide excellent voltage withstand capability.

Typical high-voltage ceramic capacitors can easily achieve 1kV, 2kV, 3kV and higher. In addition, they offer:

Wide operating temperature range
Excellent humidity resistance
Strong aging resistance
Stable performance under harsh industrial environments

These characteristics make them particularly suitable for applications such as:

Industrial power supplies

Laser equipment

Automotive electronics

Security and surveillance systems

At JEC (Dongguan Zhixu Electronics), we offer a wide range of high-voltage ceramic capacitors up to 50kV. Looking for the right high-voltage capacitor solution for your application? Contact us today for free samples and one-on-one selection support.
